Vertex Cover Structural Parameterization Revisited

چکیده
A pseudoforest is a graph whose connected components have at most one cycle. Let X be a pseudoforest modulator of graph G, i. e. a vertex subset of G such that G−X is a pseudoforest. We show that Vertex Cover admits a polynomial kernel being parameterized by the size of the pseudoforest modulator. In other words, we provide a polynomial time algorithm that for an input graph G and integer k, outputs a graph G′ and integer k′, such that G′ has O(|X|) vertices and G has a vertex cover of size k if and only if G′ has vertex cover of size k′. We complement our findings by proving that there is no polynomial kernel for Vertex Cover parameterized by the size of a modulator to a mock forest (a graph where no cycles share a vertex) unless NP ⊆ coNP/poly. In particular, this also rules out polynomial kernels when parameterized by the size of a modulator to outerplanar and cactus graphs.

Raising The Bar For Vertex Cover: Fixed-parameter Tractability Above A Higher Guarantee
The standard parameterization of the VERTEX COVER problem (Given an undirected graph G and k ∈ N as input, does G have a vertex cover of size at most k?) has the solution size k as the parameter. The following more challenging parameterization of VERTEX COVER stems from the observation that the size MM of a maximum matching of G lower-bounds the size of any vertex cover of G: Does G have a vert...
متن کاملDual parameterization and parameterized approximability of subset graph problems
We discuss approximability in FPT-time for the class of subset optimization graph problems where a feasible solution S is a subset of the vertex set of the input graph. This class encompasses many well-known problems, such as min dominating set, min vertex cover, max independent set, min feedback vertex set. We study approximability of such problems with respect to the dual parameter n − k wher...
متن کاملOn Polynomial Kernels for Structural Parameterizations of Odd Cycle Transversal
TheOdd Cycle Transversal problem (oct) asks whether a given graph can be made bipartite (i.e., 2-colorable) by deleting at most l vertices. We study structural parameterizations of oct with respect to their polynomial kernelizability, i.e., whether instances can be efficiently reduced to a size polynomial in the chosen parameter. It is a major open problem in parameterized complexity whether Od...
متن کاملKernels for Structural Parameterizations of Vertex Cover - Case of Small Degree Modulators
Vertex Cover is one of the most well studied problems in the realm of parameterized algorithms and admits a kernel with O(`2) edges and 2` vertices. Here, ` denotes the size of a vertex cover we are seeking for. A natural question is whether Vertex Cover admits a polynomial kernel (or a parameterized algorithm) with respect to a parameter k, that is, provably smaller than the size of the vertex...
متن کاملPlaying with parameters: structural parameterization in graphs
When considering a graph problem from a parameterized point of view, the parameter chosen is often the size of an optimal solution of this problem (the “standard” parameter). A natural subject for investigation is what happens when we parameterize such a problem by various other parameters, some of which may be the values of optimal solutions to different problems. Such research is known as par...
